Thakradhara: An Effective Classical Panchakarma Therapy from Kerala

Thankradhara is one of the most effective classical Panchakarma therapy in Ayurveda that involves the continuous pouring of medicated buttermilk (Thakra) over the forehead, entire body, or affected area. 

“Thakradhara combines two words Thakra (medicated buttermilk), and Dhara (stream), where the flow of the buttermilk is smooth and offers deep relaxation and healing. At Vaidyaratnam Vrindavan Ayurveda Chikitsalayam, Thakradhara is performed in the classical keraliya tradition. 

Hence, freshly prepared buttermilk is used for the treatment. Importantly, the milk used to make Thakra is sourced from our in-house Govind Ji Gaushala, which ensures purity, ethical care, and the highest-quality of treatment. 

Line of Treatment – How Thakradhara is Performed at VVAC

Pre-Treatment
Health seeker’s Prakriti (body constitution) and ailments are assessed by our senior Ayurvedic doctorsA suitable medicated decoction is prepared by mixing herbs into fresh buttermilk Also, the health seeker at VVAC is asked to relax before the session for the treatment to work the best way  
During Treatment 
The health seeker is prepared for the treatment and is asked to lie comfortably on the Droni (traditional wooden therapy table) A specially designed vessel with a small opening in the bottom is placed over the head and buttermilk pours smoothly in a continuous streamThe stream is directed mainly over the forehead (Ajna Chakra region). In some cases on the entire body The temperature of the buttermilk is carefully maintained, which is usually cool or lukewarm (depending on the health concern) Two trained therapists gently massage the body while the Dhara continues 
Post-Treatment 
The buttermilk is gently wiped off and the health seeker rest for a short while Herbal tea (Panamrutham) is given just after the treatment for warmth and nourishment Light, sattvic, organic, and prescribed meal is served to extend the benefits of the therapy 
The Typical Duration of this Treatment: 30 to 60 Minutes

  • Fresh Buttermilk – Prepared daily from A2 milk sourced from VVAC’s Gir cows. 
  • Medicated decoctions (Herbal infusions like Amalaki, Nimba (Neem), Sandalwood, and Mustha (Nutgrass), depending on the condition. 
  • Cooling Herbs (Known to balance the aggravated Pitta dosha
