Shirodhara is more than just a therapy – it is a holistic healing experience that rejuvenates your mind, body and soul. In a stressful world, adding Shirodhara to your wellness routine can help you relax deeply and improve your health over time.

What is Shirodhara treatment?

Shirodhara is a classic Ayurvedic treatment. In this process, warm medicinal oil, milk, buttermilk, or decoction is gently poured onto the forehead. Focuses on the third eye area. It is performed in a continuous manner for a specific duration. The type of herbal liquid depends on the imbalance of dosha or the disease that we need to treat. It is one of the best Ayurvedic treatments for insomnia, anxiety and other mental illnesses.

The word “Shirodhara” is derived  from two words of Sanskrit:

Shiro = Head

Dhara = Flow

Shirodhara therapy mainly calms your mind and balances your imbalanced bodily doshas.

4 Types of Shirodhara in Ayurveda

As you have seen above, different types of medicinal liquids are used in Shirodhara therapy. This solely depends on the disease we are dealing with and the doshas involved in the pathogenesis. This is the best decision by your ayurvedic doctor.

  1. Taila Dhara – In this type of Shirodhara, specific medicinal oils are used. This is basically done in Vata or Vata – Kapha aggravated conditions.
  2. Ksheera Dhara – Ksheera dhara is performed using medicated milk. It is advised mainly for pittaja ailments as cow’s milk possesses cooling properties.
  3. Takra Dhara –  In Takra Dhara, Takra (i.e. buttermilk) is used mainly to treat Kapha dosha-related conditions.
  4. Kashaya Dhara – Kashaya dhara involves the use of herbal decoctions or simply warm water. The medicines used to prepare the decoction vary according to the condition and dosha.

10 Health Benefits of Shirodhara Therapy

Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment. It provides many health benefits, making it a popular wellness therapy. Come with me to explore the 10 wonderful effects of Shirodhara-:

  1. Reduces Mental fatigue

Shirodhara supports your nervous system by providing it with a calm and composed state. It has a soothing effect on your over-occupied brain cells. This effectively reduces exhaustion and fills you with new and more energy.

2. Relieves Stress and Anxiety

Shirodhara deeply relaxes your exhausted nervous system. This treatment reduces stress hormones present in your body, such as cortisol. When your mind becomes calm, your body gets free, and you automatically feel happy. Shirodhara is a very relaxing and rejuvenating therapy for your mind and body.

3. Improves Sleep Quality

Shirodhara is used to improve both the quality and quantity of sleep. It induces your hypothalamus and pituitary gland to promote melatonin production. This treatment is highly effective for your insomnia or disturbed sleep patterns.

4. Enhances Mental Clarity

When you take regular sessions of Shirodhara, it helps in improving your focus and memory. This therapy stabilises your mind, so that you can perform at your 100 % efficiency without any extra stress. It clears down the mental confusion and clouding of memory by nourishing your brain cells.

6. Relieves Headache and Migraine

In Ayurveda, headaches are often associated with an imbalance in Vata dosha. The warmth and unctuous nature of the oil used in Shirodhara effectively reduce elevated Vata dosha. Thus, this traditional Ayurvedic treatment helps to reduce and manage your headaches and migraines too.

7. Improves local blood circulation

Shirodhara therapy helps in improving blood circulation in your head and forehead. Abhyanga before the main procedure aids this. The heat of the oil used in Shirodhara helps in the vasodilatation of blood vessels.

8. Promotes Hair and Scalp Health

Herbal oils used during the treatment nourish your scalp. The unctuous quality of Shirodhara reduces the dryness of your scalp and strengthens your hair roots.

9. Balances Hormones

Shirodhara stimulates the hypothalamus and pituitary centres present in your brain. These are the main centres that control hormonal balance in your body. When these centres work efficiently, your hormones remain in balance. This, in turn, manages mood swings and treats your hormone-related issues like Hypothyroidism and PCOD.

10. Increases concentration and memory

Shirodhara is a therapy that nourishes and revitalises your brain. This process, through its soothing therapeutic effect, calms down your mind. A calm mind can focus better and remember things more effectively. When you have clear thinking, you can concentrate better.

11. Counters jetlag

If you travel a lot, then Shirodhara is perfect for you. If you suffer from jetlag or insomnia due to frequent flying; then this therapy helps to reset your daily routine. It regularises your sleep – wake cycle. Your body gets exhausted while travelling continuously, so it relaxes your exhausted body and decreases fatigue.

Shirodhara Procedure –Step-by-Step Guide

Shirodhara therapy is done by skilled Ayurvedic therapists. They work closely with your Ayurvedic doctor. This practice is done in a calm and hygienic environment using a Shirodhara apparatus. The apparatus is specially designed to perform Shirodhara therapy.

Now that you have seen the apparatus. Let’s see how  Shirodhara is performed at VVAC using this apparatus.

Dravya (liquid) Selection:  A herbal liquid is chosen based on your body type, dosha and illness. This is completely done by your Ayurvedic doctor, as the selection of the correct medicine is of the utmost importance.

Preparation:  The therapist will give you a relaxing and rejuvenating head massage. A head massage relaxes your muscles and improves the blood flow. This increases the absorption of the oil used during the procedure. After that, you lie down on your back with untied hairs on the wooden table (Droni) in a relaxed position. The therapist will cover your eyes and ears using a cotton cloth or a gauge piece so that the oil may not enter your eyes or ears.

Pouring Process:  warm medicine is poured slowly and continuously on your forehead in a steady flow using a large bowl filled with warm oil. The pouring can be done on your third eye point, or the therapist may oscillate the stream left to right and vice versa.

Duration: One session usually lasts for 30 to 60 minutes.

Post-Therapy Rest: You should take proper rest for better results. Rest increases the efficiency of the therapy and provides you with a calm and relaxed mind. You can take a bath 1 – 2 hours after the procedure is over.

Precautions: Avoid too much screen time after therapy. Don’t do heavy or strenuous exercise post therapy.
