In Ayurveda, the eyes are considered one of the most vital organs (indriyas) of the body. Deemed to be as the “windows of the soul.” Hence, protecting and nourishing the eyes through Anjana is recommended by classical Ayurvedic texts.
Anjana is a unique therapeutic procedure where medicated collyrium (herbal paste) is freshly prepared at in-house Kashayapura and applied to the inner surface of the eyelids.
Anjana is a classical Ayurvedic treatment and not only deemed as an eye care but also is a preventive and curative therapy. This therapy removes impurities, improves eyesight, and keeps the mind alert and refreshed.
At Vaidyaratnam Vrindavan Ayurveda Chikitsalayam (VVAC), Anjana is performed in its authentic classical form, under the guidance of expert therapists and doctors using authentic formulations.
Types of Anjana in Ayurveda
Ayurveda classifies Anjana into three main types, which are based on different types of herbs.
1. Lekhana Anjana (Scraping Anjana)
The treatment is made from the herbs that have lekhana (scraping and cleansing properties). This treatment helps in removing excess secretions, dirt, or sticky discharge from the eyes. Additionally, it is useful in conditions like watery eyes, itching, or heaviness in the eyes from all the increased digital screen time.
2. Ropana Anjana (Healing Anjana)
As per this Anjana, the health seeker feels cooling and soothing in the eyes. It helps in recovery from eye concerns caused by inflammation. The treatment helps reduce redness, burning sensation, and eye strain.
3. Prasadana Anjana (Soothing/Strengthening Anjana)
To improve clarity of vision, prevent early degeneration, and keep eyes refreshed, Prasadana helps health seekers with heavy screen-time exposure, mental strain, or living in polluted environments.

How Anjana is Performed at VVAC |
Pre-Treatment The patient undergoes a detailed eye and body assessment by our senior and experienced doctors. Further, selection of Anjana type (Lekhana, Ropana, or Prasadana) is based on the eye condition and body composition. Preparation of herbal paste or medical collyrium in our in-house kashayapura at VVAC |
During Treatment VVAC health seeker is made to sit in a comfortable position. Eyes are gently cleaned before administering the treatment with medicated water or herbal decoction. The medicated collyrium is carefully applied to the lower eyelid using a fine applicator or stick (Shalaka). Following, the health seeker is asked gently to close and open the eyes that allows the medicine to spread evenly. |
Post-Treatment Mild tearing, burning, discomfort, or watering may happen, which is normal as it is a part of the cleansing process. After some time, the eyes feel light, clear, and refreshed. The doctors advise resting, pause, and eye care precautions for the day. |
