A respiratory disorder is any disease or condition that affects the respiratory system, the complex network of organs and tissues responsible for taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. This system includes the lungs, airways (nose, throat, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles), diaphragm, and other muscles involved in breathing.
In Ayurveda, treating respiratory diseases goes beyond just addressing symptoms; it focuses on restoring balance within the body and promoting holistic healing. Here’s how Ayurveda tackles respiratory issues:
Understanding Respiratory Diseases in Ayurveda:
Dosha Imbalance: Ayurveda views respiratory diseases as primarily a result of imbalances in the doshas, particularly Kapha Dosha (responsible for structure and mucus) and Vata Dosha (governing movement and communication). Excess Kapha leads to mucus accumulation and blockages, while Vata imbalance can disrupt airflow and worsen congestion.
Treatment Strategies:
Panchakarma: This detoxification process helps eliminate ama and restore doshic balance. Therapies like Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enemas), and Nasya (nasal administration of medicated oils) cleanse the body, clear mucus, and improve lung function.
Rasayana: Rejuvenation therapies with herbs like Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), and Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) possess powerful expectorant, bronchodilatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. They help clear mucus, improve airflow, and reduce inflammation in the airways.
Honey And Cloves. A mixture of cloves (at least 7-8) and bananas must be kept overnight and eaten the next day to strengthen the lungs. After an hour (nothing to be consumed during the time), follow this up with a little hot water and honey. This is very helpful for those suffering from chronic bronchial asthma
