How Ayurveda Treats Asthma?

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian holistic medicine system, offers a comprehensive approach to managing asthma, focusing on addressing the root cause of the imbalance and treating the whole person, not just the symptoms

What Treatments Do We Offer?

  1. Here’s how Ayurveda tackles asthma:

    Understanding Asthma in Ayurveda:

    • Kapha-Vata Imbalance: Ayurveda views asthma as a “Kapha-Vata Vyadhi,” implying an imbalance in both Kapha Dosha (responsible for structure and stability) and Vata Dosha (governing movement, communication, and energy flow). This imbalance leads to excess mucus production, airway blockage, and difficulty breathing.

      • Ama Accumulation: Improper diet and lifestyle can lead to the accumulation of “ama,” a toxic substance that clogs channels and worsens congestion and inflammation in the lungs.

      Treatment Strategies:

      1. Panchakarma: This detoxification process helps eliminate ama and restore doshic balance. Therapies like Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enemas), and Nasya (nasal administration of medicated oils) cleanse the body, reduce mucus production and improve lung function.

      2. Rasayana: Rejuvenation therapies with herbs like Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), and Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) possess powerful expectorant, bronchodilatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. They help clear mucus, improve airflow, and reduce inflammation in the airways.
      3. Swasthavritta and Aahara Vihar: Lifestyle modifications play a crucial role in managing asthma. A balanced diet rich in easily digestible foods, fruits, vegetables, and warm spices like ginger and turmeric is recommended. Avoiding cold, heavy, and mucus-forming foods like dairy and fried foods is advised. Regular exercise tailored to individual needs, focusing on gentle breathing exercises like pranayama and yoga postures like Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) and Marjaryasana (Cat Pose), can further improve lung function and flexibility.
