Ayurveda is one of the oldest and centuries old systems of healing. The word Ayurveda means “Science of Life.” (Ayur+ Veda). It was developed by wise sages and vaidyas who studied nature and the human body deeply. However, the emergence and further development of Ayurveda cannot be attributed to just one person.

Thanks to them, their valuable knowledge has been recorded in ancient books like Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya. These books became the guiding light for the upcoming vaidyas to refer, treat, practice, and expand it.

Speaking about Ayurveda, it teaches how to live a healthy, balanced, and holistic life. Unlike other forms of medicines, ayurveda is not limited to addressing the symptoms of the diseases, which proves to be a temporary bandage on the injury.

Although Ayurveda is recognised as “Alternative medicine” in layman terms, however, this field is beyond just medical healing. It focuses on good food, daily habits, herbs, yoga, and clean thinking.

It is not just for treating illness but also for staying healthy. Even today, more and more people follow Ayurveda to take care of their health naturally.

Ayurveda is also connected to Lord Dhanwantri, who is known as the God of Ayurveda. He appeared during the churning of the ocean holding a pot of Amrit, the nectar of life. People worship him as the divine healer. His blessings are believed to bring health and long life.

In fact, all the authentic classical ayurvedic institutes include the recital of Dhanwantri Mantra before and after the Panchakarma treatment.

The Lineage of Ayurvedic Wisdom

Long before Ayurveda became a global phenomenon, the knowledge of this ancient healing science was preserved and passed down through a few elite physician families in Kerala. Among them stood the Ashtavaidyans, a group of eight prestigious Brahmin families with the complete mastery of the eight branches (Ashta Angas) of Ayurveda.

The word Ashtavaidyan literally means “master of the eight limbs of Ayurveda” a title earned only after years of rigorous training, scriptural study, and hands-on clinical practice. These families not only upheld the classical texts like Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya but also kept alive Kerala’s unique Ayurvedic formulations and therapies.

Descent of the Vaidyaratnam Tradition

In Kerala, a unique Ayurvedic tradition developed called Ashtavaidya. It means “eight physicians” and refers to eight Brahmin families who mastered all eight branches of Ayurveda. These eight branches are:

Kayachikitsa (general medicine), Shalya Tantra (surgery), Shalakya Tantra (ENT and eye care), Kaumarabhritya (pediatrics), Agadatantra (toxicology), Rasayana (rejuvenation), Vajikarana (aphrodisiac therapy), and Bhutavidya (psychological healing and spiritual medicine).

There are eight branches of Ayurveda like toxicology, ENT eye care, Pedicure, and more

Alathiyur, Eledath Thaikkattu, Kuttancheri, Pulamanthole, Thrissur Thaikkattu, Vayaskara, Olassa, and the famous E.T. Mooss family of Thaikkattusseri, which is the founding family of Vaidyaratnam

These families passed down their knowledge through generations, preserving classical Ayurvedic practices.

The Thaikkattu Mooss family is a legendary name in the world of Ayurveda. Their deep connection with this ancient science goes back to the time of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Lord Parasurama reclaimed Kerala from the sea and turned it into a land of health, peace, and prosperity.

Over time, many great Ayurvedic families carried this tradition forward. One such respected name is Vaidyaratnam. This legacy was built by the Mooss family in Kerala. They followed the classical texts and gave Ayurvedic treatments to people across generations.

Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala was founded by Ashtavaidyan E.T. Narayanan Mooss in 1941. His deep knowledge and service earned him the title “Vaidyaratnam” from the British Viceroy. Ever Since then, the founding members and allies have continued to expand Ayurveda and its benefits.

One of the three esteemed founders of Vaidyaratnam received Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Award
