How Ayurveda Treats Intervertebral Disc Prolapse?

Intervertebral disc prolapse (IVDP), also known as herniated disc, can be effectively managed through Ayurveda’s holistic approach

What Treatments Do We Offer?

Intervertebral disc prolapse (IVDP), also known as herniated disc, can be effectively managed through Ayurveda’s holistic approach. Here’s how Ayurveda tackles this condition:

Understanding IVDP in Ayurveda:

  • Vata Vyaadhi: Ayurveda views IVDP as a “Vata Vyadhi,” implying an imbalance in the Vata Dosha, governing movement, communication, and energy flow. This imbalance leads to degeneration and weakening of the discs, making them bulge or herniate.
  • Kapha Accumulation: In advanced stages, Kapha Dosha (responsible for structure and stability) can worsen the protrusion and cause stiffness and rigidity.

Treatment Strategies:

  1. Panchakarma: This detoxification process eliminates accumulated toxins (ama) that clog channels and worsen inflammation. Therapies like Virechana (purgation), Sneha Karma (oleation therapy), and Basti (medicated enemas) cleanse the body, improve circulation, and support disc health.

  2. Rasayana: Rejuvenation therapies with herbs like Ashwagandha, Bala, and Rasna nourish the spine, strengthen muscles, and reduce inflammation
  3. Swasthavritta and Aahara Vihar: Lifestyle modifications are crucial. A balanced diet rich in easily digestible foods, vegetables, and calcium-rich foods is recommended. Avoiding cold, heavy, and acidic foods is advised. Regular exercise tailored to individual needs, yoga poses like Marjaryasana (Cat Pose) and Balasana (Child’s Pose), and pranayama like Shitali (Cooling breath) further support healing.
