How Ayurveda Treats Parkinson's ?

In Parkinson’s disease, Ayurveda proposes a holistic approach focusing on balancing the doshas, managing symptoms, and potentially slowing disease progression

What Treatments Do We Offer?

In Parkinson’s disease, Ayurveda proposes a holistic approach focusing on balancing the doshas, managing symptoms, and potentially slowing disease progression. Here’s how Ayurveda treats Parkinson’s:

Understanding Parkinson’s in Ayurveda:

  • Vata Vyadhi: Ayurveda views Parkinson’s as a “Vata Vyadhi,” suggesting an imbalance in the Vata Dosha, governing movement, energy, and communication. This imbalance leads to degeneration of nerve cells and impaired dopamine production.
  • Other Doshas: In advanced stages, Kapha Dosha (structure and stability) can worsen rigidity and stiffness, making treatment adjustments necessary.

Treatment Strategies:

  • Panchakarma: This detoxification process removes accumulated toxins (ama) that block nerve channels. Virechana (purgation) and Basti (medicated enemas) cleanse the system and support nervous function.
  • Rasayana: Herbs like Ashwagandha, Brahmi, and Mucuna pruriens (naturally rich in L-Dopa) nourish nerves, strengthen muscles, and boost immunity. Chyawanprash is often used for its antioxidant and rejuvenating properties.
  • Swasthavritta and Aahara Vihar: Lifestyle modifications play a key role. A balanced diet rich in easily digestible foods, seeds, and green leafy vegetables is recommended. Avoiding heavy, fermented, and cold foods is advised. Regular exercise tailored to individual capabilities, yoga, and pranayama further support healing.
  • External Therapies: Abhyanga (herbal oil massage), Swedana (sweat therapy), and Shirodhara (pouring medicated oil on the forehead) improve circulation, relax muscles, and alleviate tremor and pain.
