How Ayurveda Treats Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder, a condition causing pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint, can be effectively managed through Ayurveda’s holistic approach

What Treatments Do We Offer?

Frozen shoulder, a condition causing pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint, can be effectively managed through Ayurveda’s holistic approach. Here’s how Ayurveda tackles this condition:

Understanding Frozen Shoulder in Ayurveda:

  • Vata Imbalance: Ayurveda views frozen shoulder as a “Vata Vyadhi,” implying an imbalance in the Vata Dosha, governing movement, communication, and flexibility. This imbalance leads to dryness, constriction, and accumulation of Kapha Dosha (responsible for structure and stability) in the shoulder joint, restricting movement.
  • Ama Accumulation: Improper diet and lifestyle can lead to “ama,” a toxic substance that clogs channels and worsens inflammation and stiffness in the shoulder joint.

    Treatment Strategies:

    1. Panchakarma: This detoxification process eliminates ama and balances Vata Dosha. Therapies like Virechana (purgation), Sneha Karma (oleation therapy), and Swedana (sweat therapy) cleanse the body, improve circulation, and promote flexibility.

    2. Rasayana: Rejuvenation therapies with herbs like Guggulu, Ashwagandha, and Rasna nourish joints, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility.
    3. Swasthavritta and Aahara Vihar: Lifestyle modifications are crucial. A balanced diet rich in warm, easily digestible foods, vegetables, and spices like turmeric and ginger is recommended. Avoiding cold foods, heavy meals, and processed foods is advised. Regular gentle exercise tailored to individual needs, yoga poses like Gomukhasana (Cow Face Pose) and Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose), and pranayama like Kapalbhati (Skull-shining breath) further support healing.
    4. External Therapies: Abhyanga (herbal oil massage), Pizichil (pouring medicated oil over the body), and Shashaka (herbal poultice application) improve circulation, relax muscles, and alleviate pain.
