Asava and Arishta: Asava (fermented infusions) and Arishta (fermented decoctions) are a special kind of herbal fermentations of the traditional Ayurvedic system. They are prepared by allowing the herbal juices or their decoctions to undergo fermentation with the addition of sugars, honey or jaggery . Fermentation takes place by the addition of a source of sugar with Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz) flowers. Many preparations contain additional spices like cardamom, cinnamon and other spices and herbs, for improving their assimilation. The self-generated alcohol doesn’t induce addiction but shows several advantages, like better keeping quality, enhanced therapeutic properties, and improvement in the efficiency of extraction of drug molecules from the herbs.
